Blocks of the Month for 2018:

Anthology Block of the Month:

Our latest Block of the Month “Anthology” will commence in January 2018. A beautiful quilt of 182 4” x 5” blocks.  The first month you will receive the book and a fabric pack.  Each month after that for a further 17 months you will receive a fabric pack of some of the newer fabrics available.  This program will be more of a fabric club as you will choose your fabrics from the monthly mailing to make your blocks.  My quilt will be made at the same time as yours!!!

Cost: $35 per month for 18 months.

 Eleganza Thread club:

These beautiful threads are a must have addition to your thread collection! Each month you will receive 5 spools of Eleganza Thread, 4 Perle 8 and 1 Perle 5.  After the twelve months you will have an amazing collection of sixty threads.  This program has already started but places are still available.

Cost: $37 per month for 12 months.

 Fig ‘n Berry:

On offer from Fig ‘n Berry next year are two Stitchery of the month programs, one with a sewing theme, the second a Christmas theme. Each runs for nine months.

Cost: $18 per month for 9 months.

 Regency Block of the Month:

This is a new quilt designed by me. It will be made from a beautiful new blue and white fabric range being released by Moda in April next year.  An EQ 8 printout of the design using the fabrics ordered is available for viewing.  At this stage I am seeking expressions of interest.  Further information will be available at a later date.

Watch out for a new Hatched and Patched Block of the Month, hopefully early in the new year.

Magic Patch Quilting in 2018

2018 will mark fifteen years since the doors of the retail shop, Magic Patch Quilting first opened. It will also see the closure of those same doors but not the closure of our beloved patchwork shop.  Big changes are happening!  But rest assured you will still be able to buy fabric and other goodies as well as attend classes.

The next stage of the ‘five year’ plan is about to be enacted! It is time I had a little bit more time to ‘smell the roses’, time to spend with my family, my sewing machine and my caravan.

Magic Patch Quilting is going back to where it all started seventeen years ago – home. We have created a Studio to allow us all to continue enjoying our favourite activity.  Enough room for quilting, classes, and of course, fabric and gadgets.

When will this all happen?  Saturday, February 17th, 2018 will be the last day of trading at Frankston Flinders Rd.  Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 will see the Studio open for the first time.

How will it work?

  • Classes will continue at the times already established. The shop will open at these times for retail customers as well.
  • Outside class times opening hours are by appointment only. A phone call is all that is required to see if I am available.
  • Block of the Months will be processed on the first Tuesday of the month as usual, but, they will all be posted out at no extra charge to anyone, unless, of course, you are in a class and can collect at that time.
  • I will still be quilting! Dropping off and collecting quilts can be arranged by phone or email.
  • The website will be open 24/7 to shop online, although I do understand the need to see, touch and feel first!
  • Mail order of anything you require is only a phone call away.
  • Our Facebook page and Magic Patch Sewing Room Group as well as Instagram will continue to run as normal – watch out for special happenings here in the future!
  • The Newsletter will still be sent out each month, full of the latest news from Magic Patch Quilting.
  • And my Blog, well that might evolve more with a little more time available!
  • More time will also allow me to expand the catalogue of Carol Lewis Designs patterns – something I am very much looking forward too.

First term in 2018 will continue much the same as always, except that there will be a break in classes after week 3 to give us time to close the shop and move! Week 4 of all classes, and all further classes will be in the new Magic Patch Quilting Studio.  I will give you location details closer to the time.

The Newsletter, Facebook and Instagram will now play a vital part in my communication to you all. Please check regularly and you will stay up to date with everything.  Plans are underway for some special things in the future!

During the last 15 years I have made some incredible friends, friends who have challenged me to things I had previously never dreamed I would be able to achieve. There has been much laughter and fellowship, as well as a few tears, along the way.

The community that has developed around Magic Patch Quilting is wonderful to be part of. I would like to thank each and every one of you for taking this journey with me, and hope that we will continue to travel the next part of the journey together.

Merry Christmas to you all. May you all enjoy a special time with loved ones and friends, and also find a bit of time for touching needles, thread and fabric!

New Block of the Month in planning

Planning is underway for a new Block of the Month.  I have found a newly released book that will make a great quilt.  It has lots of lovely blocks for us to piece!  The finished result is pretty spectacular as well.

With the design taken care of my thoughts turn to fabric.  This quilt needs to be very scrappy with one fabric to pull it all together.  it would be a great idea to be able to use it as a fabric club – use pieces of all new fabrics that come into the shop.  But I need some to make a sample!  So to the shelves and off come a selection to be included as well!

some beautiful reds

stunning blacks

and gorgeous blues.

Now I had better get on with making some blocks.  Hopefully this weekend will see that happen!

The Block of the Month is planned to start at the end of the year, but no further information is available at the moment.  as they say “watch this space”!!!!!

Til next time – happy stitching

Star Gazing Tuesday

Our Churn Dash Tuesday is now finished and the next program – Star Gazing Tuesday will start next Tuesday July 4th.  Head over to our Facebook page for more details.

To coincide with this we are launching a new Facebook group – Magic Patch Sewing Room.  This group is a place to post photos of any item you have made that is from Magic Patch Quilting or a Carol Lewis Design.  It will be a focal point for our online community to share their work.

This group will also host programs such as Star Gazing Tuesday – big plans so stay tuned!

In the meantime I have had fun chosing my fabrics for my Star Gazing quilt.  All are currently available in the shop, a couple have just arrived!

A few backgrounds.

And some lovely blues and reds.  Can’t wait to see this quilt finished.

What will you choose for your quilt?

Til next time

Outback Wife Fabric

Featured in our window at the moment is our selection of this gorgeous range of fabrics.  We currently have three of the beautiful barkcloth prints.

The large pink flowers with the wheat stems in the background.

Allover floral of pink and purple flowers.

Exquisite yellow flowers with gold print behind

And a few lovely textured plains!.

What did we make?  So far two beautiful dresses!

Taylah’s dress with great fussy cutting on the bodice.

And Fiona’s featuring the plain fabric as trim.

My work in progress at the moment is a quilt from these lovely fabrics.  We are expecting more of the large prints to arrive at any time, the quilt will probably be finished when they arrive!

If you feel like you would like to try your hand at making a garment from these  or any other of our fabrics ask – if there is enough interest a class will be organised!

Lulu Lane fabric

A very pretty, fresh new range called Lulu Lane arrived instore this week.  It immediately set my mind to thinking about a quilt that I designed and made a long time ago called Gelato Delight.  A lovely range to remake it in I thought.

But which fabric will be best to use in the nine patch blocks?  I think these two would make beautiful blocks.

The star blocks.  Which ones?  Only this one left after I have chosen sashing and borders.

What to put with it? A quick look around the shop and I decide on a background fabric and to reuse one from the nine patch blocks.

Only decision left is which one for sashing and border.  Will this one be the sashing?

And this one the border?

Or will it be the other way round?  Time will tell!

Watch out for the updated Gelato Delight to appear in the shop soon.

Til next time, happy stitching!

Easter

Easter is almost here and we have a couple of last minute gift ideas to make.  A quick little bag to hold special easter eggs or a rabbit.  Just a reminder that we will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Saturday.  Have a special time and remember to eat lots of chocolate and hot cross buns!

New Arrivals in the shop……………

What happens when new fabric arrives that you can’t really remember ordering but you must have?  It also turns out to be a bit different from what usually appears but is so BEAUTIFUL you just have to use it so that everyone else can see the possibilities!

The mind immediately sees the great fussy cutting options!  But what to do with them?  As it is Mandala month in our most recent Block of the Month  this option springs to mind!

Out comes the fusible web and we start cutting and playing!

Until finally it is finished!!!

The result a stunning cushion to grace your home?  (Kits are available)

I wish working in a patchwork shop was like this everyday!  Believe me it’s not!! (a day in a thousand me thinks!)

Special quilt making journey!

During the journey of making my version of the beautiful Sundial Coverlet I learnt many more things than how to make a quilt!  It was a journey filled with emotion and wonder,  did the unknown maker of the original quilt enjoy the mathematical challenge of all the little pieces?  What was her original vision for this quilt or did it just grow with time?  Where did she find the time in her busy days to piece all these little pieces?  Did she work on her quilt by candle light at night?  So many questions filled my head as I imagined her life.  I had the advantage of computers, calculators, sewing machine, not to mention LED  lights.  But I did share the eternal problem of time!  My journey was shared with friends who also made their version of the original quilt.  Was hers a shared journey or a solitary one?  The fabrics I chose to use are all Reproductions to mirror those in the original quilt.  It is a very scrappy quilt but that doesn’t mean that each fabric wasn’t carefully chosen for each block!  Unfortunately our journey had to finish when the last stitch was sewn.

If you would like to make your very own version of the Sundial Coverlet the pattern is now available as a Pattern of the Month, along with starter fabric packs to help get you started.  Interested?  Contact us at the shop and we will be only too happy to help you start your journey.
